SHEDONIST: Origin Story Interview by Jenna Rose
Jul 05, 2024For Nashville artist Shedonist, creating music is a controversy in itself. With a new single, "Weight of Your World", along with its corresponding music video, on the way, we had a lot to discuss about their new project and the journey it took to get here.
Who was involved with this project? What drew you to those people?
Shedonist: ["Weight of Your World" was] Produced, engineered, and mixed by drummer Ben Foerg. Written by Jasmin Toubi, Conor Spellane, Walker DuBois, and Ben Foerg. I'm lucky enough to have had Ben produce our album and our upcoming singles!
Who are your musical and general life influences and in what ways do we hear them come out in this project?
S: I'd say we're a blend of classic rock, blues rock, grunge, alternative, and punk. Growing up listening almost exclusively to Persian music due to my parents being immigrants from Iran, I think this has also had an impact on our style, adding a little flair to the mix.
Growing up the child of immigrants from a country where it's illegal for women to make music, the act of making music itself has always felt somewhat defiant for me. In a life where my parents who taught me to love music wanted me to do something else for my career, it was alway an internal struggle of "am I doing the right thing with my life?". Our next release, "Weight of Your World" is about this struggle, and choosing yourself over what the world expects of you.
What are you hoping that your audience takes away from hearing it?
S: I hope people are inspired to do the things they love and not listen to the weight of the world hanging on their shoulders. Your life is your own, so live it your way.
Is this a sonic change from your past releases?
S: This next single is a blend sonically of our last two music video releases. Black Hole was very grungy and raw, and Ain't Going Down is bluesy. Weight of Your World combines the two in a way, while also keeping that dreamy feeling that Ask Me Why, the single before that, has.
When you are not creating music what do you like to do in your free time?
S: Spending time in nature is always important for me to stay grounded and connected to the earth!
What does the next year look like for you and your career?
S: We've got one more single recorded after this one, working on getting back into the studio with new material!
Where can we find you to follow along?
